Thetis wan remote

Postby f6dro » Sat Dec 14, 2024 5:43 pm

Hello ,
after using openhpsdr mrx for a long time and being quite satified with it , I still had a regret : WAN remote was not working for me.
Yesterday I've installed the latest version of Thetis ( protocol1 here) , and started to look at the various configuration menus.
Big surprise , there is something new there : a "serial/network/Midi/cat" menu.
By looking more closely to the network menu it seems it is now possible to use wan remote.
Unfortunately , I'm a microwave engineer and tcp/ip networking is a bit fuzzy for me.
Is there somewhere a tutorial on how to setup this wan access ( preferably via vpn)? I have setup a local vpn on my network working on a raspberry pi.
It would be better than direct access via my router as I don't have a fixed IP address.

There is no "WAN remote" capability in Thetis.

The settings menu you are looking at are for connecting other software and devices to Thetis via your local area network (LAN), not over the internet.

For example, see this topic: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=4249&p=28188

Ok , tnx, pity, it is something very important nowadays.I suppose the problem comes from the way the network behaviour is done in the anan firmware?

The openHPSDR architecture has always been "thick client", not the "thin client" required for easy and efficient remote access.

In this case, thick client is defined as moving high bandwidth IF data between the software (nominally Thetis) and the hardware.

In a thin client architecture like Flex has all DSP is performed inside the box and only audio/video/control data is moved between the software and hardware. That requires a lot less bandwidth and is more amenable to remote access over the internet.

It is possible to approximate this with our radios by setting up screen sharing software on the main radio PC. People have used a variety of solutions including Microsoft RDP, Teamviewer, etc. It's difficult and kludgy but it is possible to get it to work.

Ok tnx for the information. Abt remote , I've tried with Anydesk , it was close to work , I've only failed to get microphone audio routed to the anan , but maybe I will try harder.
One thing not so fine with this solution is to have a pc constantely runing while I am away but I have not tried yet the PC sleeping option being awaken by a network command.

I run my Anvelina SDR always as remote via OpenVPN out
to my Remote-qth and it works very good. the only problem is when I tx, the mic signal is the Mic is cracking on the connection, but
it is becurse I run fiber from home and the last 2km i do it buy WIFI (2.4Ghz )...but I found a software to fix this

it is "Sonobus" a software where you can make a Audio tunnel from your radio and home whit a buffer you can adjust after
your need for best buffering latency

and the best is that this software is also free ware https://www.sonobus.net/

I have a soundcard "BhereingerUMC-202hd" at home and also 1 at my remote there is connected whit hardware cable to the radio :-)
the remote soundcard power is driven from the small Dell-PC there run my Open vpn server, and I run ASIO between this to units.

I run My Anvelina SDR Using Thetis v.1.10.3.8_dev1 from home whit good result, SSB , Digital...mm

Ben,

If no part of this goes over the internet (WAN) then it's not really an answer for Dom. It sounds like you own this entire link, fiber+WiFi. Is that correct? And, if that is correct, and you have unobstructed line-of-sight between the Wi-Fi radios, then I can highly recommend the following as a solution that will require no special measures, it will be as if the fiber made it the entire way:

Ben is running his radio remotely over the Internet, but on his radio end he has a microwave link to his Internet provider (no fiber available at his summer house).

I know this because I helped him set up his OpenVPN server and client.

I dont own the Fiber link and the wifi link...it belongs to my ISP as this is the way they can provide internet at my summerhouse.

and it is Jordi EA3CL who help med whit the Open VPN server and it run whit no problem, when I run remote I also use PST-rotator, 2x MSHV ( V/H-pol on 144-eme) and som remote control of power(12-400v)

so YES you can get your radio running via the internet...

Of course you can run it over the internet. I just wanted to confirm that was the situation in your case.

What sort of bandwidth do you get over this link?

This Sonobus app is very good. Thanks for the tip.

I put it on my Android and setup an input on Voicemeeter Potato for TX audio using one of my virtual audio cables.

Once active on android, the mic is always hot and I can then switch android screen to just view my Thetis console using Chrome remote. Now I can see full screen, tune it, waterfall, etc.

To transmit, I hit the mox key and away I go. I just get RX audio from the normal Chrome remote desktop.

Potato lets me setup EQ so the phone audio sounds pretty good, just limited to what looks like 2.8K from the phone mic circuit.
