G2 RX2 & numb ADC1

Postby n6mud » Sun May 19, 2024 4:17 pm

I recently hooked up a receive antenna to the RX2 port on the back of the G2. I then pressed the RX2 button in Thetis and observed a noise floor of -132. This was very low for me. When I hook up the same antenna to Ant2 port the noise floor is -118.

All of the signals on the 2nd receiver are all very weak and it appears the ADC1 is not working correctly. Is there anything in Thetis that could be causing this? ATT is set to 0. When I plug my main primary antenna into the Rx2 antenna port the same thing happens. All of the signals are very weak. So this is not an antenna issue, more like a hardware or Thetis issue.

I have tried resetting my database and the same issue persists.

Here is a screenshot of my ADC setup:

Thetis version: 2.10.3.6 -Dev_2

P2App Version:

Product: Saturn; Version = 2
FPGA Firmware loaded: Saturn, full function; FW Version = 10
All clocks present
p2app client app software Version:13 Build Date:31 Oct 2023 19:14:36

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Craig

Try reset to default for ADC.

That's the first thing I tried. Do I need to update my p2app client to a newer version?

I updated to the latest P2app version and updated FPGA and the same issue persists:

SATURN Protocol 2 App. press 'x <enter>' in console to close
register access connected to /dev/xdma0_user
FPGA BIT file data code = 30092023
Product: Saturn; Version = 2
FPGA Firmware loaded: Saturn, full function; FW Version = 10
All clocks present
p2app client app software Version:22 Build Date:6 May 2024 14:49:08
Die Temp = 48.2C

Your FPGA needs to be flashed with version 12.

When you say RX2 you are referring to your second receiver? I think this as does the main VFO works between ANT1, 2, and 3. Maybe someone who does diversity receive will chime in as they will know better.

I just upgraded to FPGA version 12 and still the same issue. I have an antenna plugged into the RX2 port and then when I enable the RX2 (second receiver) the 2nd receiver is at least 25db lower than the primary receiver in terms of all signal strength.

After some exploring on Thetis I stand corrected, you can’t select the antenna port in RX2. I sure thought you could for some reason. I hooked up a second antenna to RX2 port and it works fine, my ADC setting look just as yours does in your first post. Hopefully someone else can chime in with some suggestions.

Good luck

Re: RX2 & numb ADC1

Is the behaviour the same with piHPSDR?

Checked so far: correct ADC, bad database, old versions. Here's a couple of other ideas:

- Perhaps there is a fault with the bandpass filters for the RX2 input. You might try selecting the bypass state on those.

- Remove the covers and check for any loose RF connections or cables.

Did RX2 ever work for you?

BREAK

Labeling this connector RX2 is one of the most confusing things in the design. It should be labeled "ADC1", and the three antenna ports should have an additional label that says "ADC0". Labeling it that way would make it far more clear that an "RX" is a software construct and not a hardware construct and that either or both of RX1 and RX2 can be assigned to either ADC0 or ADC1. Maybe we should all get out our label makers :D

Bypassing the filters didn't fix anything. I also removed the covers and confirmed all antenna connections were tight.

So it appears this is a hardware issue, since Thetis is configured correctly as best as I can tell. I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this behavior before on the G2? I injected an S9 (-73dBm) signal into RX2 port and the 2nd receiver showed -115dbm response. That's -42dbm attenuation, making RX2 unusable.

Hi Craig,

I agree that this really seems like a hardware issue.
The RX2 port on my G2 is seeing the exact same signal strength as the RX1(ANT1) port.
Might be time to reach out to Doug?
Too bad though, it being a brand new rig and all :-(
